Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 1, 2026
Swell Feels is made by Parker L Hansen LLC ("we", "us"). This policy explains what the app stores, who can see it, and how you control it.
What we collect
- Account information: your email address and the display name you choose. If you sign up with email, your password is stored only as a secure hash by our authentication provider. We can't see it in readable form. If you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive only what you allow them to share, typically your name and email. If you choose Apple's "Hide My Email", we receive a private relay address instead of your real one.
- What you log: spot, date, start time, tide, conditions, wind, water temperature, crowd, duration, board, how the session felt, notes, and who you surfed with, if you choose to add them.
- Your setup: boards, custom feelings, your spot list, and settings like units, dark mode and reminders.
We don't collect your contacts or photos, and we don't track you across other apps or websites.
Location: if you allow it, the Log screen uses your phone's location to list the surf spots nearest you. Your location is used on your device only. It isn't saved, sent to us, or shared.
Photos: if you tap Save to Photos on a share card, the app asks for permission to add images to your photo library. It can only add the image you chose. It can't see, read or upload any of your photos.
Age: where the law requires it (for example, in Texas), the app asks Apple to confirm you're 13 or older. Apple shares only an age range, not your birthday, and we don't save it or send it anywhere.
Purchases: Swell Feels is free to try. If you buy the Swell Feels Unlock, Apple handles the payment and we don't see your card or Apple Account details. The app asks Apple on your phone whether you've unlocked. If usage stats are on, we count that a purchase happened, linked to your random account ID.
What we don't do
- We don't sell your data, to anyone.
- We don't show ads or share your data with advertisers.
- We don't run your notes or reflections through AI or any automated content analysis.
- We don't use your data for anything other than running and improving the app for you.
Who can see your data
Only you. Every record is tied to your account, and access rules in our database stop anyone else from reading or changing it.
Services we use
- Supabase stores your account and data on servers in the United States and handles sign-in and account emails. Data is sent over encrypted connections. supabase.com/privacy
- Apple and Google: if you choose "Sign in with Apple" or "Sign in with Google", they confirm your identity and share your name and email with us. We don't receive your Apple or Google password or access to anything else in those accounts. Their own privacy policies apply to that sign-in: apple.com/legal/privacy and policies.google.com/privacy.
- PostHog (analytics, United States): the app sends simple counts of what happens in it, like "app opened", "session logged" or "data exported", tied to a random account ID. It doesn't receive your notes, feelings, spots, conditions, name or email, and it does not record your screen. You can turn this off in the app under Settings > Usage stats. posthog.com/privacy
- NOAA and Open-Meteo: when you pick a spot on the Log screen, the app asks them for that beach's tide, swell, wind and water temperature. They receive a beach location and a date only, not your name, email or anything you've logged.
We don't use advertising tools, and we don't use analytics for anything beyond improving the app. If that changes, we'll update this policy first and tell you in the app before the change takes effect.
Feedback
If you send feedback from the app, we receive your message linked to your account so we can follow up. If you delete your account, the message is kept without your identity.
Sharing
Nothing leaves your account unless you use "Share outside the app" or "Share your stats", which create an image you choose to save or send yourself.
Cookies and tracking
The Swell Feels app doesn't use cookies, advertising IDs or cross-app tracking. For usage stats, the app keeps a random ID on your phone that isn't tied to your name or email until you sign in. You can turn usage stats off anytime in Settings > Usage stats.
This website:
- No cookies. This website doesn't set cookies or save anything on your device, so there's no cookie banner to click through.
- No analytics: this website doesn't run analytics or tracking scripts.
- Global Privacy Control and Do Not Track: because we don't track you on this website or across other sites and apps, there's nothing for these signals to turn off.
- Hosting: Netlify hosts this website. Like any web host, it handles your IP address to deliver the pages. netlify.com/privacy
- No third-party scripts: fonts and images load from this website. We don't use Google Fonts, ad pixels or social media embeds.
- Links: the App Store and Instagram links take you to Apple and Meta, and their privacy policies apply there.
We don't sell your data or share it for advertising.
Keeping and deleting your data
We keep your data while your account exists. In the app:
- Settings > Data > Export downloads everything as a spreadsheet or backup file.
- Clear all data deletes your sessions, boards and custom feelings.
- Delete account permanently deletes your account and everything in it from our servers. This can't be undone.
Two things stay behind after you delete your account: usage counts already sent to PostHog, which are tied only to a random ID that no longer connects to you, and copies in our database provider's backups, which are overwritten within about 7 days.
If there's a data breach
We protect your data with encryption in transit, access controls and private-by-default storage. If we learn that your personal information was accessed without permission, we'll notify you by email without unreasonable delay, explain what happened and what we're doing about it, and notify regulators where the law requires.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, including California (CCPA/CPRA) and the EU/UK (GDPR), you may have the right to access, correct, delete or export your data. You can do most of this in the app. For anything else, email us.
Children
Swell Feels is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child has created an account, email us and we'll delete it.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that affects how your data is used, we'll tell you in the app before the change takes effect.
